CYUT takes home the Special Education Award

CYUT dedicates to creating a barrier-free environment, enabling students with limitations full access to the college experience. As a token of recognition, the Ministry of Education granted the Special Education Award to CYUT last week. Lee Li-Wen, who has served students with special education needs for twenty-four years, won the Excellence Award in Special Education and Student Counseling.
CYUT is the trendsetter in Taiwan to establish the Special Education Center (the Center), serving over 1,500 students with special education needs in the past twenty-five years. It was encouraging that some students, under the support of the Center, won the National Presidential Education Award out of their hard work and unyielding perseverance. Lee Li-Wen, the student counselor, believes that as long as the school and community provide appropriate support, acceptance, patience, and understanding, students with limitations can also give full play to their strengths and contribute to society.
Realizing an accessible campus for students with limitations requires barrier-free designs and facilities to make students comfortable and independent: special computer appliances, ramp boards for wheelchairs, adjustable desks and chairs, handrails, ramps, parking, lifts, signage, automatic doors, staircases, dormitories' electric beds, widened-bathrooms, and emergency bells. Besides, CYUT provided transparent masks and real-time interpreting and captioning services for students' online learning during the pandemic. CYUT pledges to continue working with the government for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and strive to help students with limitations attend school as others and overcome barriers with grit.
