Industrial design students achieve Sustainable Biomimicry Design Awards

Supported by New Taipei City Government and the National Science and Technology Council, the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research and Biomimicry Taiwan co-hosted the Taiwan Biomimicry Design Challenge 2022. The event aimed at promoting Biomimicry and encouraging students to take nature as their teacher to create sustainable designs for societal needs. The competition attracted 69 entries from 20 universities. CYUT is proud that industrial design students achieved remarkable results this year. They demonstrated capabilities to innovate bioinspired designs for better solutions to global challenges.

Emergency Shelter Tent is for refugees displaced by war. It imitates the folding fins of bionic earwig, enabling the tent to expand up to 10 times in proportion. It is labor-saving and easy to fold and store, providing refugees a temporary shelter at any time, anywhere. The design achieved the Sustainable and Circular Economy Awards.

Another award-winning design, Detachable Marine Filter, is inspired by the gill raker of the plankton-eating manta ray. It can be installed in the hull of offshore ships to capture, filter, and recycle the garbage in the ocean. It prevents water creatures from accidentally eating plastic particles of too small a size and achieves ocean purification. No doubt it won the Sustainable Fisheries Awards.

Like the Detachable Marine FilterMulching Film is also a collaborative work with students of National Taiwan University. It won the Honorable Mention by imitating the triangular hair structure of the Saharan Silver Ant that can reflect sunlight and resist heat and high temperature. The triangular-structured diatomite mulch performs better in soil permeability. It prevents farmers from using traditional plastic mulch to cover fields for seed germination, causing great harm to agricultural production and the environment.

Open-Seas Oil Collector is another Honorable Mention that works with National Tsing Hua University and National Cheng Kung University. It imitates the leaves’ fiber hair structure of the floating moss, which is super hydrophobic and strong in oil absorption, absorbing oil only but not water. It can clean up oil spills and recycle the oil after absorption. It is an efficient artificial oil removal and absorption agent which is economical and environmentally friendly, effectively solving oil spill pollution.
