Ko Wen-Je talks about life and death to CYUT students

The Student Union and Office of Student Affairs invited Ko Wen-Je, former mayor of Taipei City, to give a speech on 4 Jan 2023. Seven hundred and fifty seats were booked within seconds. Ko delivered an inspirational speech on life and death with his well-known sense of humor. Students enjoyed it very much.

Ko recalled his first day wearing the white coat as a physician. There was a patient who could not be saved because of being seriously injured by a scaffold. The bride could only devastatingly watch the groom lying on the bed without conscious. He asked students, "What it takes to be considered alive? I was the first physician to bring ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) to Taiwan, but if a person only relies on medical machines to live, is this still considered living?" He encouraged young people to give their life meaning and live in the moment. He said being a politician is a totally different life experience, "The most difficult thing is not to face setbacks but to face all kinds of setbacks without losing enthusiasm.”

“Be kind, do your best, and do not take successes and failures too seriously because glory and wealth are all empty in the end. What really matters is to find the meaning of life and live life to the fullest,” he concluded.
