University Social Responsibility (USR) is a long-term commitment to sustainability. It involves mobilizing resources and expertise to combat societal and environmental challenges innovatively. Last week, the Global View Magazine again granted CYUT the USR Model Award for its outstanding performances in university governance, environmental policy, community care, and SDGs-related research and curriculum.
CYUT pledges to achieve a yearly 2% reduction in carbon emissions and net zero by 2045. It provides over 4,000 SDGs-related courses for all students and faculty members. The campus has a green coverage rate of over 94% that creates a habitat for diverse animal species, including the Indian giant flying squirrel, crested goshawk, five-colored bird, Asian grass frog, small-purple-spotted butterfly, etc. CYUT’s green efforts make it to the Top 100 in the UI GreenMetric World University for 6 straight years. It also won certification from the Environmental Protection Administration as one of the environmental education facilities and venues.
In the past ten years, CYUT has saved more than 16 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 4,800 households in Taiwan. It also trimmed down greenhouse gases by 17,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2e), equal to the carbon reduction of 50 Daan Forest Parks. Only 17.5 liters of water are consumed daily per person, far below other universities' averages. The USR team won the Impact Award from CommonWealth Magazine for agricultural waste recycling and green economies. Their invention - the Interlocking Irrigation System for Green Wall - won the Gold Medal in the International Warsaw Invention Show (IWIS) and America’s Science & Invention Expo (ASIE).
