Bridging Generations: CYUT’s Innovative Intergenerational Learning Model

In response to declining birth rates and the rising demand for elderly daycare, CYUT has pioneered an intergenerational learning model with support from the Ministry of Education. On March 26, CYUT held a sharing session highlighting achievements in this model, showcasing a video of 30 grandparent-grandchild pairs engaging in food and agriculture education and baseball games. The event also marked the signing of an MOU with Mutsun Preschool, establishing Taiwan’s first Intergenerational Learning Demonstration Site through industry-academia collaboration.
Since 2012, CYUT has led the way in intergenerational learning, securing over NT$60 million in government funding since 2020. Currently, 87 kindergartens in Taiwan are piloting this model, with 20 schools offering semester-long cross-generation learning courses. Mutsun Preschool, a 2,300-square-meter facility in Beitun District, Taichung, is set to open in August, becoming the first school to fully adopt the new model. It will serve as a demonstration site for other schools transitioning to intergenerational learning, enhancing kindergarten sustainability, addressing elderly daycare needs, and fostering intergenerational well-being.
With support from its affiliated preschool, CYUT has launched two intergenerational learning classes, bringing together children, community elders, and senior learners in a four-month program that strengthens child development, emotional bonds, and cross-generation connections. A key highlight is the Intergenerational Baseball Team, which promotes elderly social participation and a healthy lifestyle through grandparent-grandchild interaction. By bridging generational gaps, CYUT sets a new benchmark for intergenerational education, creating a healthier, more inclusive society.
