CYUT champions social responsibility among private technological universities

CYUT has been ranked No. 1 in the 2025 CommonWealth University Social Responsibility (USR) Citizenship Awards, outperfoming 140 public and private universities in Taiwan. The evaluation covered four key areas, including governance, teaching, social engagement, and environmental sustainability across 40 indicators. CYUT earned an average score of 7.82 and a perfect 10 in peer-reviewed sustainability performance, placing it at the top among private technological universities.
President Tao-Ming Cheng highlighted that the award does not rely on academic metrics like SCI or SSCI publications. Instead, it assesses universities based on their fulfillment of social responsibilities aligned with the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). CYUT’s efforts focus on stakeholder inclusion and community impact, with its USR initiatives extending across 14 counties and 35 field sites, particularly in key agricultural areas.
Hsi-Hsien Yang, Dean of Research and Industry-Academia Collaboration, emphasized CYUT’s global recognition for sustainability, including rankings in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, QS Sustainability Rankings, and the Triple E Award from ACEEU, making it the only Taiwanese university to receive this distinction. CYUT’s USR initiatives cover cultural preservation, ecological restoration, youth empowerment, rural revitalization, and intergenerational learning, reflecting its strong commitment to sustainable community development.
This year, the USR Award introduced a judging panel of eight experts from academia and industry. CYUT’s intergenerational learning project received the highest score of 8.57. In response to Taiwan’s aging population and declining birth rates, CYUT developed an innovative model combining early childhood and elder care through shared activities like food education and intergenerational baseball. The initiative has supported 87 preschools and established Taiwan’s first demonstration site, earning widespread recognition for promoting generational integration.
