Scam Alert: Beware of “Romance Scams” Online

Campus police have recently reported two cases involving students targeted by romance scams. Scammers often use social media, dating apps, or messaging platforms to build trust, then manipulate victims into sending money or engaging in private activities. Please stay alert.

Common Scam Tactics

1️ Requests for Gift Cards or Digital Credits

  • Scammers build a relationship through chat
  • Then ask for help purchasing gift cards, game credits, or digital vouchers
  • Common excuses: emergencies, helping with payments, completing tasks, or “investment opportunities”
  • Once codes are shared, the money is usually not recoverable

2️ Sextortion (Video Chat Blackmail)

  • Scammers initiate video chats after building trust
  • They pressure victims into explicit or private behavior
  • The interaction is secretly recorded
  • Victims are then threatened with exposure unless they pay money

🚨 How to Protect Yourself

  • Never send gift cards or money to online contacts
  • Avoid explicit or private video chats with strangers
  • Be cautious of any requests involving money, investment, or favors

🛡️ What to Do If You Suspect a Scam

  • Stop all communication immediately
  • Do not share any personal information
