CYUT Indigenous Cultural Day Highlights Diversity and Inclusion
CYUT celebrated its Indigenous Cultural Day on June 2, featuring traditional clothing, dance performances, craft displays, and cultural exchange. Organized by Chaoyang Aboriginal Club, CYUT’s Indigenous student organization, the event aimed to promote Indigenous cultural education on campus and help students and faculty better understand the rich traditions of Taiwan’s Indigenous communities.
The event opened with the dance “Fangcalay: A Beautiful Today,” inspired by the Hualien County Indigenous Harvest Festival. The highlight was a traditional clothing runway show, where Indigenous students presented the clothing styles of 14 Indigenous groups, including the Amis, Atayal, Paiwan, Bunun, Puyuma, Rukai, Truku, and Tsou. Each outfit reflected the history, identity, and cultural wisdom of its community.
The university said it will continue supporting Indigenous students through academic guidance, career counseling, financial assistance, Indigenous language courses, and cultural programs. CYUT currently has 168 Indigenous students and provides support through its Indigenous Student Resource Center. Through events like Indigenous Cultural Day, CYUT hopes to build a more inclusive campus where students can celebrate their heritage, share their culture, and strengthen mutual respect across communities.
