CYUT received a Bronze Award at the 2026 Taiwan and Asia-Pacific Sustainability Awards, held on August 27 at the Taipei World Trade Center. The university was recognized in the Social Inclusion category for its community-based initiative, “Learning from Place, Learning Across Generations,” which promotes university social responsibility (USR), lifelong learning, and sustainable community development. The award was accepted on behalf of the university by Shu-Chu Liao, Chief Officer of Continuing Education.

Organized by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy, the awards recognize organizations that make meaningful contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). CYUT’s award reflects its long-term efforts to bring university resources into local communities and to encourage residents to become active participants in neighborhood improvement and sustainable development.

The initiative has been carried out in Taichung’s historic urban districts through Wu Chuan Community College. Its main areas of focus include urban revitalization, river and cultural preservation, and environmentally friendly living. Activities such as community GIS mapping, digital archives, river monitoring, citizen science, and urban farming allow participants to learn directly from their neighborhoods and take part in preserving local culture and the environment.

The project supports SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 15: Life on Land. By bringing together residents of different generations, community organizations, and local resources, CYUT has helped turn learning into practical civic action.

Liao said the award recognizes the long-term efforts of CYUT’s Office of Continuing Education and Wu Chuan Community College. Looking ahead, the university plans to expand participation among young people, older adults, new residents, and underserved groups, while continuing to preserve local history and strengthen community-based learning. Through these efforts, CYUT aims to extend USR beyond campus and help build more resilient, inclusive, and livable communities.
