CYUT has continued its interdisciplinary conservation work in Kinmen, bringing together expertise in architecture, landscape design, ecology, and community engagement to help protect the endangered Eurasian otter.

Working with local partners and the Hecuo Community Development Association, faculty from CYUT’s Departments of Architecture and Landscape and Urban Design organized an environmental education program for elementary school students. Through talks, field observation, and hands-on activities, students learned about otter habitats, waterways, ecological corridors, and the importance of biodiversity conservation.

Kinmen is home to Taiwan’s only stable population of Eurasian otters, which face growing threats from habitat loss, road development, water pollution, and other environmental pressures. The program helped students understand how healthy waterways and connected habitats are essential to the species’ survival.

CYUT faculty also incorporated local culture into the activities, turning the community into an outdoor classroom where children could connect environmental conservation with everyday life.

The initiative reflects CYUT’s commitment to university social responsibility and supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 14: Life Below Water, SDG 15: Life on Land, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

CYUT plans to continue working with local schools, communities, and conservation partners to promote environmental education, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development in Kinmen.
